Abstract:
In Proclaiming Civilization by Forging Constitutions, Zhang Yongle delves into how the Vienna System influenced the political formation of the Chinese national community through the “theory of civilizational hierarchy.” The Vienna System established a civilizational hierarchical order via “temporalized spatial politics." Meanwhile, as the “intermediate link” between the international system and the national community, China's local political elites developed a dual shaping mechanism of “Generational Division”and“Professional Interest Realignment." By applying the conceptual history approach, this book uncovers the disruptions and transformations of the concept of “civilization” during its domestic dissemination. It showcases the interaction between the structural pressures of the international system and local political practices, thereby offering a more nuanced analytical framework for understanding the political transformation of late-developing nation-states.
